We have had dachshunds most of our life.  My first
dachshund, Tim, was supposed to be a miniature black/tan.
I later found out he was a tweenie because he just kept
growing to almost the size of a standard!  However, he was
a great dog and always brought a lot of joy into mine & my
brother's life.  Our next dachshund, Lucky, another classic
black/tan retired to Mexico and lived the good life to the old
age of 19 years.  Because of all the fun I had with those
dogs, and the amazing personalities they had, we've
decided to pursue this breed and add some dachshunds to
our own family.

If you're looking for a dachshund but would like to know
some more information about the breed, here's a few
questions and answers for you.  If you'd like more
information to determine if a dachshund is right for you,
please feel free to contact us at any time!

Q.  What sizes is a miniature dachshunds?
A.  Miniatures average around 11-12 lbs and under at 12
mths of age.  They come in 3 coats - smooth, long and wire
hair.

Q.  What type of dog is a dachshund?
A.  Dachshunds are great pets!  They love being around
"their" people and tend to best with adult families or those
with older children.  Their personalities have earned them
the title "clowns" of the dog world.  They are lively, bold,
affectionate, and proud dogs.  They can be very stubborn
and aren't always easy to housebreak or train b/c of this.
Ultimately, they want to please their people.  Be warned -
with their cute looks and charming personalites, they have a
tendency to train their owner rather than the other way
around.  Don't be surprised if your dachshund ends up
sleeping in your bed with you!

Q.  Are there any health risks with dachshunds?
A.  Because of their long backs, they are prone to spinal disc
problems.  Proper care in picking up and holding your
dachshund is necessary.  They are also prone to becoming
overweight.  This can be a health risk b/c of the added strain
on their spines.

Q.  What kind of lifestyle are they good for?
A.  Dachshunds are great indoor dogs.  Again, they love to
be where their family is.  They also love to snuggle with you
and be held.  Sometimes I think this is b/c they are so short
that when you hold them, they are up higher and can peruse
their kingdom easier.  They are surprisingly active dogs and
do require a bit of exercise (to keep off the pounds).  They
make great travel companions and would gladly accompany
you on any trip in the car!  They tend to get along well with
other dogs but they can be fairly jealous on occasion.   Also
be careful that they are not stepped on by bigger dogs b/c of
possible damage to their back.  I have big dogs as well as
dachshunds and they all get along great!
